(or Chai, or Matcha… I don’t judge)
There’s something sacred about that first warm sip of coffee. It asks you to pause. To be still. To listen—maybe to yourself, maybe to someone else's story. And if you're anything like me, this is also the moment to crack open a book that lingers long after the mug is empty.
These are some of my favorite reads from our podcast Brown Girls Read (@browngirlsreadpod). They’ve sat beside me on sleepy mornings, rainy afternoons, and wide-awake 2ams. Organized by genre, because moods change and books should match.

☕ Memoir & Personal Growth
Perfect for slow mornings when you want to feel connected and real.
Becoming by Michelle Obama
A story that unfolds like a long conversation over coffee. Michelle’s voice is warm, wise, and unapologetically human. Her journey from South Side Chicago to the White House is inspiring, yes—but more than that, it's honest. She talks about ambition, motherhood, marriage, and identity in a way that feels both grounded and empowering.
Wild by Cheryl Strayed
Sometimes healing doesn’t look graceful—it looks like hiking boots, blisters, and a whole lot of grief. Cheryl’s solo trek on the Pacific Crest Trail is part adventure, part reckoning, and wholly raw. A reminder that you don’t need to have it together to begin again.
Untamed by Glennon Doyle
This one’s a mirror and a megaphone. A call to stop asking “What will they think?” and start asking “What do I want?” Glennon’s chapters are short, punchy, and best read slowly—with margin notes and side-eye at the patriarchy.
The Courage to Be Disliked by Ichiro Kishimi & Fumitake Koga
Told as a dialogue between a philosopher and a young man, this book isn’t about surface-level confidence—it’s about deep freedom. A bit cerebral, a lot challenging, and totally worth the mental squinting.

💼 Productivity & Mindset
For that mid-morning refill, when your brain wants something to chew on.
Atomic Habits by James Clear
Life-changing doesn’t always have to be dramatic. This one’s about tiny tweaks—how brushing your teeth, picking your clothes, or setting a 2-minute rule can shape your future. It’s the kind of book you highlight so much, your pen runs dry.
Ikigai by Héctor García & Francesc Miralles
A gentle little book that invites you to slow down and ask: what makes life worth living? Drawing from Japanese philosophy, it blends purpose, joy, and longevity into one steaming cup of reflection.
🛋️ Fiction with Feels
Curl-up-on-the-couch books with big heart and lush storytelling.
The Henna Artist by Alka Joshi
Set in 1950s Jaipur, this book is a sensory feast. Think vivid saris, jasmine oils, secrets behind closed doors. Lakshmi, the protagonist, is fierce and flawed, navigating independence in a world that’s not built for her freedom.
The Palace of Illusions by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni
A retelling of the Mahabharata through Draupadi’s eyes? Yes, please. This book is poetic, powerful, and rooted in feminine rage and longing. Read it for the prose, stay for the perspective shift.
Unmarriageable by Soniah Kamal
Think: Pride & Prejudice, but set in modern-day Pakistan with shaadis, social media, and biting wit. Kamal’s version is clever, joyful, and sharp-eyed about class and gender roles. A feel-good read with real depth.
🧠 Relationships, Routines & Rebalancing
Books that feel like coffee with a friend who tells it to you straight.
Fair Play by Eve Rodsky
This one had us ranting (and laughing) on the podcast. It breaks down emotional labor in households—and offers a blueprint for making it fair. If you’ve ever muttered “why is it always me?”, this book gets you.
Big Friendship by Aminatou Sow & Ann Friedman
A love letter to deep, sustaining friendship—the kind that stretches across years and mess. They don’t sugarcoat the hard parts, and that’s what makes it beautiful. Less self-help, more “you’re not alone.”
Books and coffee might not solve everything, but they do remind you that you're not the only one figuring it out as you go.
If you’ve read any of these (or want to), come hang out with us over at Brown Girls Read—we’ve got episodes on a bunch of them, and we're always down for a cozy book chat. 📚🤎
